Daniel Tammet
Added Wednesday 24.06.2009There are a few people on the face of the globe that when you hear about them you can only say WOW! (No, not World of Warcraft for all you crazy people out there, just wow!) Daniel Tammet is one of these people. Daniel is an autistic savant, and an extremely impressive one at that. On the face of things Daniel seems very unassuming, but his abilities for mathematical calculations, memory, and general learning ability is extraordinary.
Tammet holds the European record for reciting pi from memory to 22,514 digits in five hours and nine minutes. At last count Daniel could speak eleven languages and is even creating a new language called Mänti. He has the ability to pick up languages very quickly and was challenged to learn Icelandic in one week! Which he did, and appeared on Icelandic television on day seven holding a conversation in Icelandic.
One of the many extraordinary things about Daniel is his ability to see numbers and calculation as shapes and colours. He has described his visual image of 289 as particular ugly, and 333 as particular attractive.
Born on 31 January 1979 he has already written a memoir, Born on a Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant
. Where 31 January
1979 happens to be a Wednesday, a day he perceives as blue. He has also written
another book, Embracing the Wide Sky: A Tour Across the Horizons of the Human Mind
, in which he attempts to shed some
light on the mystery of savants' mental abilites.
Danial Tammets website can be found at http://www.optimnem.co.uk/. It includes his blog, language courses he has written, as well as his visual perception of pi artwork.
