Ben Underwood is a remarkable person and an inspiration of what can be achieved by the human mind and body. One should take note that, if the mind is open and not restricted by perceived boundaries the ability to accomplish extraordinary tasks are made possible.

Ben was diagnosed with retinal cancer at the age of two and as a result had both his eyes removed at the age of three. By the age of five he developed the ability to sense the locations of objects by making frequent clicking noises with his tongue and listening to the reverberations, some what similar to sonar on a submarine or dolphins. Using his ability Ben has been able to perform tasks thought almost impossible for a permanently blind person such as playing basketball, rollerblading, riding a bicycle, even skateboarding.

Even though Ben has an almost unfathomable gift it isn't complete unique. There are a few other known cases of people with this ability, also called 'echolocation'. Daniel Kish is another such person, whom also teachers other blind people to use echolocation. Also, one cannot forget DareDevil! Yes, he is a fictional comic book character but as you can see he is not entirely out of the realms of possibility. Just for fun I've add a DareDevil clip at the bottom.

Sadly Ben died this year on January 19th 2009 at the age of only 16 to the same cancer that took his eyes at such as young age.
